Stacey Van Hanswyk of Stosh B Designs has had a passion for glass for as long as she can remember. She was introduced to working with glass in college with a glass blowing class in Santa Barbara. Life led her to various paths of artistic endeavors and eventually into jewelry design, where she worked primarily as a silversmith.

A few years ago Stacey was once again introduced to glass and her zeal for glass as an artistic medium was ignited all over again. She began incorporating glass into her unique silver jewelry designs. When Stacey discovered the exciting world of lampworking she knew she had found her true niche as an artist. Stacey’s enthusiasm for lampwork designs is enhanced by her rich imagination, the source of her exciting, original designs.

Stacey lives with her family in Laguna Beach, California where she works out of her home studio.

ARTIST STATEMENT

The kinetic energy of glass is absolutely magnificent – I cannot imagine working in any other medium. Since childhood I have been fascinated by the look, texture and natural beauty of glass.

Many artists work with either glass or silver but do not always combine the two mediums. This alchemy is a natural fit for me. Many have commented that my designs are reminiscent of the ocean or landscapes, that they appear plant-related or even reptilian. I agree that my designs possess an organic quality that captures the natural beauty of light and color. However, for me the beauty is in the work itself, not because it looks like the ocean or a horizon. I love the luminosity and clarity of the glass and I endeavor to finesse it just enough to allow its natural glow and magnification to appear. In other words I let the glass speak for itself in the pieces I create.

My source of inspiration is often a mystery – simply put, I am inspired by the act of creating itself. I feel so strongly about this process that it has become imperative for me to do what I do. Working with glass and silver and creating wearable art allows me to focus my energies and passion into extracting things of grace and beauty from once inanimate pieces of glass and silver. In our chaotic modern world of multitasking and conflicting priorities, this focused, pure process is a gift that I simultaneously respect and treasure.

As an artist I must be constantly learning, constantly striving to be the best that I can be. My role as teacher in this medium also enables me to achieve this goal and enlightens me with ideas and approaches I would otherwise not experience. The sheer act of working with the glass, fire and silver allows for my work to remain fresh. Every motion is new, every piece is unique - a natural, original creation designed to delight the wearer.
